How the Vega Gave Us Another Room in the Middle of Nowhere
A truck camper can take you almost anywhere, but even a comfortable rig starts feeling cramped when two people, our Doberman Brinx and a week’s worth of equipment share the space.
During our remote Great Lakes island expedition, the ZONKOO Vega inflatable shelter became our outdoor living room, dining area and all-weather gathering place. Breakfasts, hot afternoons and the hours after dinner moved outside the camper, while our chairs, food and frequently used gear remained sheltered and organized.
With approximately 129 square feet of floor space and a 7-foot-1-inch interior height, the Vega felt more like an additional room than a conventional screen shelter. Seven large windows, overhead skylights and a thick waterproof floor made that space bright, open and genuinely useful throughout the day.
That space comes with a real trade-off. At roughly 117 pounds packed, the Vega is strictly a vehicle-supported base-camp shelter. It occupies meaningful cargo space and isn’t something you casually carry far from the truck. Once camp is established, however, its air-beam structure provides a large living area without a framework of traditional metal poles.
The real test arrived when sustained rain and strong winds moved across the island. Properly anchored, the Vega remained standing through gusts we estimated near 40 mph. Its 420D Oxford fabric and taped seams handled the rain, while 38 anchoring points provided numerous ways to secure the large shelter before the wind arrived.
When nighttime temperatures dropped into the 50s, we used the integrated stove jack with ZONKOO’s large stainless-steel wood stove. With proper clearances, continuous airflow and a working carbon-monoxide detector, the shelter quickly became warm enough to remove our jackets.
The Vega didn’t replace our camper. It made the entire campsite more livable.
