Temple Rock, Utah

Eric Young

Adapted (with permission) from the field notes of Eric Young

Eric broke camp early to catch the soft light moving through Buckhorn Draw, where the last gold leaves of the cottonwoods glowed against the canyon walls. After a quick resupply in Huntington, he guided his overland rig—nicknamed The Vanadium—deep into the southern San Rafael Swell, chasing the pull of Temple Rock.

The road soon narrowed to a rough, rocky double-track meant for quads and mountain bikes, but curiosity pressed on. By sunset, Eric found a quiet shelf of shale overlooking Temple Rock and distant Gilson Butte—classic western country. Camp went up fast, dinner simmered over the fire, and the desert settled into a silence that felt almost holy.
